Spotted Thick-knee Skull
Scientific Name: Burhinus capensis
Order: Charadriiformes
Family: Burhinidae
Size: 90mm long
This bizarre looking skull belongs to a Spotted Thick-knee, also know as Spotted Dikkop. They are an African wader bird, very closely related to our Bush Stone curlews here in Australia. The Thick-knees are a little smaller. Probably the closest Australians will get to owning a legal Bush Stonecurlew skull 😅
These skulls, with their massive orbital eye sockets have always reminded me of giant Lapwing skulls.Â
This one is absolutely perfect, with all bones and its beak sheaths nicely preserved.Â
